This is not a (fire) drill! A decade after The Office officially wrapped, it looks like a reboot of the beloved workplace sitcom is in the works now that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has come to a tentative agreement with major studios, ending the months-long strike.

The Office — which ran from 2005 to 2013 — will reportedly be rebooted by original showrunner Greg Daniels, according to the most recent Puck newsletter. While there has been no word on casting, Daniels previously opened up about his desire to bring back one of television’s funniest shows.

“I can’t tell whether fans would want more of it, and when I say more of it, I don’t think it would be the same characters,” he told Collider in 2022. “I think it would just be sort of like an extension of the universe, you know what I mean, like the way [The] Mandalorian is like an extension of Star Wars. But I don’t know if that would be something people would want or not, it’s hard to tell.”

In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter that same year, Daniels said he doesn’t think an exact reboot of the show would work in this day and age — and that a character like Michael Scott (Steve Carell) would probably not get pitched in today’s climate.

“I also think that the content was very much pitched for that period of time, when people weren’t as sensitive to what is giving offense to people so that you could have a boss who kept putting his foot in it,” he said at the time. “You could feel that the content was sort of helping people see things as being offensive that they might not have seen as offensive before, because they were just used to it.”

Daniels added, “Now, everybody’s much more aware of how offensive certain things are. We’re in a different place in the cycle of consciousness-raising.”

While it remains to be seen whether or not the characters will change, John Krasinski — who famously played Jim — previously said he’d be open to a reunion.

“[The Office] was my first experience with Hollywood,” he told Esquire in 2020. “It was the first creative family I’ve ever had. In many ways, they will always be the most important people in that most important experience in my career. So yeah, if they did a reunion, I would absolutely love to do it.”

Decider has reached out to reps for Daniels for comment, but did not hear back by time of publication.

Until we have more information, you can stream all nine seasons of The Office on Peacock.
