Mention the idea of the Jets drafting a tight end in the first round of this spring’s NFL Draft to some of the team’s fans and get ready to duck.

Jets fans have long memories, and they still are recovering from the first-round selections of Johnny Mitchell in 1992 and Kyle Brady in 1995. The latter one is particularly sensitive because Brady was taken over Hall of Famer Warren Sapp.

Let’s put history aside for a minute to look at this year’s draft and a scenario the Jets could find themselves in.

The expectation is the Jets will draft an offensive tackle with the No. 10 pick. But let’s say the top three tackles in the draft — Notre Dame’s Joe Alt, Penn State’s Olu Fashanu and Oregon State’s Taliese Fuaga — are all off the board.
