Most notably, Ronny Mauricio is playing almost every day because the Mets can keep McNeil’s bat (which is needed during this stretch of underwhelming offensive production) in the lineup.
Between now and the July 31 trade deadline, the Mets have to figure out if this workable model. Is the 24-year-old Mauricio, who owns a .676 OPS, ready to contribute to a playoff push?
If the answer is no, the Mets should act accordingly, and one route would involve returning McNeil to second base full-time and trading for a center fielder who at the very least could share time with Tyrone Taylor if not claim the position outright.
