SAN JOSE, Calif. — Trades roiled the NHL on Wednesday, and the Islanders, not all too surprisingly, sat quiet.
A repeat of the 2022 deadline when Lou Lamoriello was the only general manager not to make a trade does not seem likely to play out by the end of the day Friday.
But even after Scott Mayfield went on long-term injured reserve and opened up a bit more cap space for Lamoriello to work with, the reality is the Islanders are unlikely to have the ability to do more than tinker around the edges of the roster.
The busier window for the Islanders will come over the summer. That is when there will be a real chance to either change the course of the franchise or lock it in for another year, via contract extensions and the potential retirements of Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck.
