The Hunting Wives creator Rebecca Cutter may not have a Season 2 greenlit by Netflix yet, but she knows where the jaw-dropping series will go when the renewal comes through.
Sitting down with DECIDER to talk about the success of the adaptation of May Cobb’s bestselling novel, Cutter — who also created Hightown, another murder-mystery that topped Netflix charts in July — explained that as she and the entire crew wait on Netflix to give the go-ahead, they are pondering all of the ways to give the fans more of Sophie O’Neill (Brittany Snow) and Margo Banks (Malin Akerman).
“There’s a lot stewing in my brain right now for Season 2,” she said, noting that it would be uncharted territory as Cobb’s book does not have a sequel to use as a skeleton. That said, she’s confident she will find the right direction given the compelling relationship between Sophie and Margo, which drives the series.
She continued, “I have a lot in my mind for Season 2 about Sophie and Margo.”

The fruit between these characters is ripe for picking, too. At the end of Season 1 (spoiler alert!), Sophie hits and kills Margo’s brother, Kyle (Michael Aaron Milligan), ultimately tossing his body into a ravine. This, of course, unfolds after Sophie picked up Kyle’s call from Margo, breathing heavily into one end of the phone and then abruptly ending the call. It’s fertile ground.
“The heart of the show is Sophie and Margo. This is my second murder mystery show, and there’s always at least one or two threads that run through. In this show, to me, Season 1 was: Where are Margo and Sophia at in their trajectory, and where are we at in the murder mystery? You need both things firing on all cylinders to keep people locked in.”
This is all on top of the episodes-long sex-capade the two go on, doing it all over their small Southern town and hiding it from their husbands. In the finale, however, their relationship blows up as Sophie discovers Margo is responsible for killing Abby Jackson (Madison Wolfe), the young girl whose brutal murder plays out in the first moments of the show.
The dissolution of their relationship leaves these two fan-favorite characters at odds and in a precarious situation heading into a Season 2, giving Cutter and the other writers a long leash to write some fun and messy things for them.

Cutter also said that the show will have to explore Callie (Jaime Ray Newman) and Jonny (Branton Box) getting their own reality TV series, which is teased in the finale. In the penultimate episode, Callie shot and killed Jill (Katie Lowes), branding herself and her sheriff husband — who gave us perhaps the wildest sex scene of 2025 — as the picture-perfect example of a justice-delivering, law-upholding (and abusing) couple in Texas.
“There’s a reality show on the horizon, maybe some new people come to town,” Cutter said of possible new characters in Season 2 as Callie and Jonny’s “Married to Justice” series picks up from the ground. “Maybe there’s some new troubles that arise.”
