44 years later and Alan Alda still has it.
*Spoiler alert for Netflix’s The Four Seasons*
More than four decades after Alda wrote, directed, and starred in The Four Seasons film, he has returned to the story that saw him married to Carol Burnett and best friends with Rita Moreno. In the original movie, Alda played Jack, the role now occupied by Will Forte, while Burnett played Kate, taken over by series EP Tina Fey.
In the brand new Netflix reimagination from Fey, Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield, Alda appears as a special guest star in the second episode, playing the elderly father of Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver). In the episode, “Garden Party,” Anne decides to surprise her husband, Nick (Steve Carell), with a garden party to renew their vows after 25 years of marriage. Kate has even invited all of their family and friends to celebrate, blissfully unaware that Nick told Danny (Colman Domingo) and Jack mere hours before that he is planning to divorce her.
One of the loved ones in attendance is Don (Alda), who flew from Florida to celebrate as he tells Kate and Danny, “Your daughter only gets married… a bunch of times, I guess.”
When Danny and Kate press for information on how his marriage lasted 67 years prior to his wife’s death, he gives them some equally blunt and hilarious advice on how to keep your spouse always on their toes.
“She’d kill me if I told you,” he tells the pair. “Every once in a while, we’d wake up and she’d say, ‘Congratulations, take off your pants, it’s a sex day.’ You might think of trying that with your spouse. They’d be so grateful and surprised.”
Ever the comedian, Alda’s character adds, “It’s like a dog waking up and not knowing it’s Thanksgiving. Then all of a sudden all these people come over and start dropping turkey and stuffing all over the ground.”
Alda’s appearance comes nearly 44 years to the day after The Four Seasons film premiered in theaters on April 30, 1981. Sadly, Alda is the only original actor to make an appearance in the series, although DECIDER recently chatted with Fey, who said they are open to welcoming Burnett if her schedule clears up and they get a second season.
“The doors always open for Carol Burnett,” she shared. Fingers crossed!
The Four Seasons series is currently streaming on Netflix. The film version can be viewed on FuboTV with a subsciption.
