SIGN UP NOWBack in May of 2018, the Bills put out their initial depth chart and the quarterback pecking order was A.J. McCarron, Nathan Peterman and Josh Allen. Sure, the Bills traded up in the draft to select Allen with the No. 7 pick, but the rookie was far behind the other two, as far as development and command of the offense, explained general manager Brandon Beane.
Allen eventually moved up to the backup spot and was given a chance to unseat Peterman. Allen, though, did not pass the test in the third preseason game that summer, looking flustered and confused by the Bengals pass rush.
Peterman started the season opener in Baltimore, but he did not finish the game. Down 40-0 in the third quarter, head coach Sean McDermott pulled the plug on Peterman (passer rating of 0.0) and called for Allen in an eventual 47-3 shellacking. A few days later, McDermott announced that Allen was the starting quarterback, ushering in a new era in Buffalo.
“It’s the right move for our team,” McDermott said at the time. As far as regrets for going with Peterman in the first place, McDermott added, “I felt that was the right move and I’ll take that to my grave.”
