Nelson Thomas, known for his appearances on The Challenge, is making a life-altering choice. After suffering a car accident last March, he has officially opted to have his foot amputated, per Entertainment Weekly. Thomas took to Instagram on Sunday (Feb. 11) to share the news.
“March 5th 2023 remains vivid in my memory, a persistent presence in my thoughts,” he wrote. “I consciously embrace it as the initiation of a new chapter. Opting for amputation, I am determined to own March 5th and redefine its significance in my life. Get ready, amputation world! I’m on my way! I am scheduled for surgery on March 5th, 2024. #???????? #peace #2ndchance.#rezn8 #mychallenge.”
The post features a video montage of photos, some of which are graphic shots of his injured foot. The audio over the video is a discussion between Thomas and a doctor, in which the former acknowledged that he “think[s they’ve] attacked this as long as [they] could,” and that he’s “gotten advice from multiple doctors now.”
“I had to ask myself what kind of life do I want to live and the quality of life I want to live,” Thomas can be heard saying.
Noting that he’s”spoken to amputees,” has undergone various procedures, and has sought out multiple opinions from doctors, he shared, “I think I’m at peace with it and it’s time.”
Fellow Challenge alum Johnny Bananas commended Thomas for his strength in the comments section of his post, praising him as “a warrior.”
Thomas had issued a thank you on Instagram to those who found him last March, including Minnesota Vikings player K.J. Osborn, who was “on the scene and filming my rescue.” He expressed his gratitude to three others for “pulling [him] out a burning vehicle, risking their own lives to save [his].”
According to court docs obtained by Page Six after the accident, the crash was the result of a DWI. Thomas was arrested at the hospital after being unable to pass a sobriety test, but he was later “released from custody when it was discovered the treatment for his injuries would take longer than expected,” per the documents; he was later arrested for DWI in September.
The start of Thomas’ reality TV tenure leads back to Are You The One?, per Us Weekly. He has since been featured on nine seasons of The Challenge since 2016, and has also appeared on Ex on the Beach, per EW.
