Apple TV+‘s The Buccaneers wrapped up its first season today, finally revealing to viewers which handsome British suitor heroine Nan St. George (Kristine Frøseth) committed her life to. Was it the dashing Theo, Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers), a sensitive soul who stood by Nan no matter what? Or did her heart belong to Theo’s recently-impoverished best friend Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome)? Because Nan had strong emotional connections to both young men, it was sometimes unclear if she should marry the wealthy Duke or run off with the passionate lover.
**Spoilers for The Buccaneers Season 1 finale, “Wedding of the Season,” now streaming on Apple TV+**
Now that we’ve seen The Buccaneers Season 1 Episode 8 “Wedding of the Season,” we know that while Nan technically gave her heart, soul, and body to true love Guy, she wound up marrying Theo after all. Their marriage ceremony provided the cover needed for our heroines to spirit Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) away from her abusive husband Lord Seadown (Barney Fishwick). Jinny took the ticket abroad Guy had bought for her sister and Nan married Theo understanding that as a Duchess, she would have the power to protect her sister from the lower-titled Lord Seadown.
Still, that doesn’t mean that some fans might have their own opinions on Nan’s love life. With this is in mind, Decider quizzed The Buccaneers cast on who they would choose in Nan’s position: Theo or Guy?

“Oh, I want to hear your answer,” Buccaneers star Kristine Frøseth said to her interview partner Alisha Boe.
“Here’s the thing,” Boe said, ready to spill.
“What is the thing?” Frøseth asked.
“I understand why Nan chose Theo at the end, because it’s to save her sister. But if Jinny wasn’t part of it, then obviously it would be Guy. I would want you to be with Guy,” Boe said.
“Right,” Frøseth said. “So if you were Nan, you would choose Guy, ultimately.”
“If I didn’t have to save my sister…” Boe said.
“Yeah, for sure. I agree with that. I do think she should be with Guy,” Frøseth said.
“That’s like her love match,” Boe said.
“That’s the best friend and lover,” Frøseth said. “And I think long term, it’s sustainable. There will be growth there. With Theo, it’s more kind of for the wrong reasons.”
“Sacrifice,” Boe pointed out.
“It’s a sacrifice. It’s safety, also,” Frøseth said.

However, one person disagrees with this logic: none other than Guy Thwarte himself, actor Matthew Broome.
“If I was Nan, I would struggle to get over the idea that I originally came for her money,” Broome said. “Guy’s not gonna be providing any money in that in that department. So I think potentially I would go to Theo, but —”
“Is this where I then say I would go for Guy?” Guy Remmers, aka Theo, the Duke of Tintagel, then quipped.
“No, I think it’s great that it’s such a debate and I feel that both have such great qualities,” Remmers continued after the laughter died down. “When I’m watching the show, there are moments between Nan and Guy that are just undeniable. It’s a pure chemistry spark.”
Josie Totah and Mia Threapleton, who play queer lovers Mabel Elmsworth and Honoria Marable, had a different perspective on the love triangle.
“Nan should just be gay,” Totah said. “I don’t know. I feel like we’re — [points to Mia Threapleton] — we’re doing just fine. So maybe Nan just needs to explore her sexuality and leave them both.”
“Maybe, maybe,” Threapleton concurred.
“Or she should focus on herself because obviously self care is important,” Totah said.
“That’s actually a very good point,” Threapleton said. “I honestly, I wouldn’t be, I don’t think I’d be able to choose a team. I’m just ‘Team Us.’”
“I am too. I think about it so much. I’m just thinking I’m focused on ‘this.'” Totah said, pointing back and forth at herself and Threapleton.

When it came to Imogen Waterhouse and Lizzy Elmsworth actress Aubri Ibrag, the ladies’ opinions were split amongst the consensus so far.
“I always go for the Guys, I have to say. That feels more spicy. It’s got the passion,” Imogen Waterhouse said. “I mean, Duke? Great life, happy wife, all that, but.”
“I feel like for me, if there is a doubt — there’s no doubt — than it probably shouldn’t be either of them. Because if she’s not 100% sure about either of them, then she should probably spend some time alone and figure out what she wants,” Aubri Ibrag said, echoing Totah. “So if I was her, I’d just do that.”
Of course, adding to the Theo vs. Guy confusion is the fact that the actor who plays Theo, Duke of Tintagel, is also named Guy in real life. When Decider cheekily asked the actors if it was ever confusing on set for one of them to be named Guy off-screen and for the other to be playing a guy named Guy onscreen, they laughed and shouted in unison: “ALL THE TIME.”
“When anyone ever says your name, you always perk up. So whenever we heard ‘Guy,’ we’re both like, ‘What me?’” Matthew Broome said. “You had a wardrobe malfunction.”
Guy Remmers explained: “They said, ‘Guy, you need to change costumes. So I went and changed into my other costume for the day. Did a full hour for change, came back, and then they said, ‘Oh, no, sorry. We wanted the character, Guy.’ It was, you know, constant confusion. And I sort of lost my name by the end.”
“I was just ‘Guy’ guy,” Broome said.
No matter how you felt it should have shaken out, you have to admit that in the end Nan really did get her Guy.
