Apparently, two Robert De Niros wasn’t enough to get audiences to see The Alto Knights, because the movie is releasing on digital platforms tomorrow, just three weeks after the movie opened in theaters.
Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Levinson, and written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi (who co-wrote Goodfellas), The Alto Knights looks like an old-school throwback for wise guy cinephiles. De Niro stars in dual roles in the film—rival gang leaders Vito Genovese and Frank Costello—based real mob bosses in the New York City Italian mafia in the 1950s. If you just finished binging The Sopranos, this is the movie for you.
Also starring Debra Messing, Cosmo Jarvis, Kathrine Narducci, and Michael Rispoli, The Alto Knights had its released delayed for over a year, only for it to spend just three weeks in theaters, where it’s so far made less than $10 million worldwide. Oof! Perhaps Warner Bros. will see more success from the movie with the premium digital release. But before you drop $25, you should know that we expect to see The Alto Knights streaming free on Max by this summer.
The Alto Knights will be available to buy or rent on digital platforms on Friday, April 11. You’ll be able to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie will cost $24.99 to buy, and $19.99 to rent. If you rent the movie, you’ll have 48 hours to view after hitting “play.”
The Alto Knights is not yet available on a subscription-based streaming service, but we do expect to see The Alto Knights streaming on Max eventually, because The Alto Knights is a Warner Bros. movie, and Max is the streamer owned by Warner Bros.
The Alto Knights Max streaming release date on has not yet been announced yet, but we can make an educated guess based on previous releases. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, for example, was released on PVOD two weeks after opening in theaters, and began streaming on Max on February 28, a little over two months after it was released in theaters. If The Alto Knights follows a similar release pattern, you may see the movie streaming on Max around late May or early June 2025.
But that’s pure speculation. The Warner Bros. home releases have varied by title. In the meantime, you can always catch The Alto Knights by buying or renting the movie online.
