Dallas police identified the suspect in Saturday night’s shooting at the State Fair of Texas which injured three people and sent hundreds of fairgoers fleeing in terror.
Police apprehended 22-year-old Cameron Turner and charged him with three counts of aggravated assault after the shooter turned the family-friendly event into a chaotic scene.
Fairgoers posted videos to social media that showed the frantic aftermath.
A video posted on X taken from the top of the Ferris wheel shows large, panicked crowds quickly making their way toward the exit shortly after shots rang out at the fairground food court around 7:45 p.m.
“def not what u wanna see at the top of the ferris wheel at the texas state fair,” one user commented on X.

Another video posted on TikTok showed the inside of the rodeo at the fairgrounds as a voice over the public address system can be heard telling the crowd “There is an active shooter outside” and later calling for EMTs.
Some rodeo spectators hopped the fence to dash to safety across the rodeo arena, ignoring the announcer’s warning that there were bulls out of their pens.
Police said Turner opened fire and ran from the scene before being apprehended a short distance away. Three people were shot, two adult males and one adult female, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were listed in stable condition. A gun was recovered from the scene.
Another video posted on X shows scores of terrified fairgoers, some of them crying, streaming into a building just off the midway at the direction of event staff, a chorus of screams echoing in the cement-enclosed hallway.
In a post on X, Dallas District 7 City Councilmember Adam Bazaldua said the shooting was sparked by a conflict between two people who knew each other. He also decried Texas’ permit-less carry law.
“It’s one thing to have a right to bear arms, it’s another to have legislation, like permit-less carry, that makes it easier for senseless acts of gun violence like this to be carried out in our state,” Bazaldua said.
In his own X post, Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson called the fair “a treasured event,” and expressed outrage at the violence.
“We will not tolerate this behavior,” he wrote.
According to WFAA, Turner told police he was getting a drink in the food court when a group of people approached him. He claimed he “felt threatened” and fired his weapon in self-defense.
This year marked the 137th year of the State Fair of Texas, which was attended by more than 2.5 million people in 2022.
