Alabama fans were prepared for Arch Manning’s arrival in Tuscaloosa for the first time as a member of the Texas Longhorns.
Some fans who attended the live broadcast of ESPN’s “College GameDay” made signs that blasted his decision to commit to the Longhorns over Alabama in 2022 and called him out for potentially losing his chance to win a national championship.
“ARCH CHOSE WRONG,” one sign read, with Alabama’s logo replacing the first letter of his name.
Another sign, posted to College Gameday’s official Twitter account, detailed that Manning has lost two things since committing to the Longhorns: a “UT Student ID” and “A Chance at the Nattys,” referencing the story from January when Manning appeared to lose his student ID card the first week of classes and someone posted a photo of it.
Those Alabama jokes occurred despite Manning — the No. 1 quarterback in his class, according to 247Sports — beginning the season as Texas’ backup to sophomore Quinn Ewers.
Manning didn’t play in the Longhorns’ season-opening victory against Rice, even though head coach Steve Sarkisian said postgame, according to On3.com, that he “had all intentions of playing Arch in that game.”
“I didn’t think that the fourth quarter would go as fast as it did,” Sarkisian said, according to the outlet, “and then I didn’t want to put him in there for the last minute and a half and use a game on that.”
If Manning appears in four games for the Longhorns this season, he’d eliminate the chance for the program to use a redshirt year with the 18-year-old and nephew of former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning.
Manning, the son of Cooper, struggled in his first spring game with the Longhorns, completing 5-of-13 passes for 30 yards, but Sarkisian later said that he remained on the “right trajectory” and eliminated any concerns about Manning’s transition.
Still, it’s unclear when Manning — who sits at No. 4 on On3.com’s NIL valuation tracker at $2.9 million — will get his first collegiate snaps during a regular-season game.
Texas, No. 11 in the AP Top 25 poll, and No. 3 Alabama meet Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium one year after the Longhorns nearly stunned the Crimson Tide in Austin — when Ewers exited with an injury, Texas went up by two points with 1:29 remaining and the Crimson Tide still emerged with a victory.
