NextImg:Terry Francona hospitalized with illness, misses Guardians game for medical testing

Cleveland Guardians manager Terry Francona is undergoing further medical testing at a hospital after feeling ill before Tuesday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

The 64-year-old Francona missed the game and was taken to the University of Kansas Health Systems to be evaluated “out of an abundance of caution,” given his medical history, the team said.

He missed much of the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to a variety of physical issues.

Without Francona, the Guardians rallied to beat the Royals 2-1.

Afterward, a team spokesman said Francona was still at the hospital being evaluated.

Francona was reportedly in good spirits before the game, joking with reporters during his standard pregame press conference, according to Cleveland.com.

About 20 minutes before the game, he said he was not feeling well and was taken to the hospital by ambulance out of an “abundance of caution,” the report said.

Bench coach DeMarlo Hale took over the managing duties and said he found out about Francona’s health right before the game.

“I found out right before the game — probably 15 minutes [before],” Hale said, according to MLB.com. “He gave me a shout. He said, ‘Get in here. I’m not feeling too well. I’m gonna take off.’ I said, ‘OK.’ And it was so close [to game time that] I didn’t get to ask him what’s going on. He told me to touch base with him after the game. No update yet.”

Francona has overcome a litany of health problems in recent years.

In 2017, he was unable to manage the American League All-Star team because he had heart ablation surgery to address frequent spells of a fast heartbeat and dizziness that prevented him from managing some games.

He missed most of the 2020 season because of gastrointestinal issues and had to take leave from the team midseason in 2021 to undergo hip replacement surgery and surgery on his left big toe.

Throughout his 26-year managerial career, Francona has had both hips and knees replaced and has also suffered from blood clots.

Francona, who is now in his 11th season with Cleveland, led the Guardians to a 92-70 record last season, leading the team to the American League Central division title.

For his efforts, Francona took home the AL Manager of the Year award, the third such honor of his career.

Before his stint in Cleveland, Francona managed the Red Sox for eight seasons, winning two World Series rings and breaking the 86-year Curse of the Bambino in the process when Boston won the title in 2004.

Francona also had a lengthy career on the field as a first baseman and outfielder, playing for the Expos, Cubs, Guardians and Brewers while hitting .274 with 16 home runs over a 10-year career.

The Guardians have underperformed expectations this year and are 38-40 and sit in second place in the AL Central.
