Tell Me Lies, Meaghan Oppenheimer’s thrilling Hulu series based on Carola Lovering’s novel of the same name, is back for Season 2. And for those who are dying to know, yes, the soundtrack still slaps!
Set in 2008 and 2015, the second season of the addicting drama features more nostalgic bangers and emotional needle drops that helps set the mood for all the chaos, romance, betrayal, angst, and twists that take place at Baird College and beyond.
“Oh my god, the music is so much fun,” Oppenheimer told Decider over Zoom ahead of the Season 2 premiere. “I love doing the music. It’s one of my favorite parts of the whole thing, because I’m basically just using my high school and college playlists that I listened to.”
When speaking with Decider ahead of the Season 1 finale, Oppenheimer also revealed, “I had a very specific playlist I made while I was writing the pilot that I gave to everyone.” And just like the perfect inclusion of The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” in the Season 1 finale, so many Season 2 songs help elevate the intensity of scenes.
Over the course of Season 2’s eight episodes, fans will hear artists popular including Gwen Stefani, Vampire Weekend, Mndr, The Shins, The Strokes, The Postal Service, and even Tell Me Lies star Cat Missal.
Missal, who plays Bree on the series, covered “Crazy” for the Season 2 premiere, and it appears we haven’t heard the first or the last of their music on the show. During a Zoom interview with Decider, Missal said, “Honestly, my favorite kind of music is like early 2000s or 2010, and so much of that is in the show. I was so excited and thrilled that Meaghan asked me to do this, because she knows that I make music… It was really cool. I’m really excited about the cover and the placement. It’s very dramatic.”
The Tell Me Lies star also shared that their music appears in both seasons of the show. “In the first season, I sent her some demos and she put a song of mine as background music. And she did the same this season. I just feel an overwhelming support,” Missal said.
According to Oppenheimer, she “always knew I wanted Cat to create something for the show, because they’re an amazing singer and musician. I was like, ‘How can we beat that music moment at the end of Season 1, Episode 1?’ And I thought, ‘Let’s do a callback!’ So it was nice because it feels like a callback, but also a progression. I thought Cat killed it. And our composer did an amazing job working with Cat, as well.”
