An Alabama teen accused of killing his older brother allegedly had a hit list of family members he also planned to kill and made statements about shooting up his school.
The 17-year-old brother was found dead in the woods behind the family’s Pike County home Tuesday afternoon after the older boy had gone missing the day before, according to WSFA.
Earlier that day, the younger boy, 14, was reportedly upset while at school over the fact that his brother had not been located, prompting his father to pick him up from school early, Sheriff Russell Thomas said.
The pair searched for him after returning home and that’s when the 17-year-old’s body was found.
When being interviewed by police, the younger boy eventually admitted to shooting his brother from the porch. The older boy had staggered back several yards before falling.
The suspect then dragged his brother’s body about 60 yards back and left him behind the family’s home.
No other relatives were home at the time of the shooting.
Upon further investigation, law enforcement officials discovered that the 14-year-old had confided in a friend at school earlier that day, confessing he had killed his brother.
“He then asked his friend to help him murder the rest of his family and help him bury their bodies,” a news release from police read.
The friend later told cops that the 14-year-old had a “hit list” in his bookbag detailing the members of his family he wanted to kill — and that he had also made statements about how he wanted to shoot up their school.
Police searched the suspect’s bag and located the list.
The 14-year-old, who has not been named, was taken into custody and charged with murder.
“We are very fortunate and blessed we do not have more casualties as a result of a 14-year-old having access to a weapon,” Thomas added.
It was not immediately clear how the teen got access to the gun.
