Spoilers for Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 6 ahead!
The “Rebecca Prophecy” continues on this week’s all-new episode of Ted Lasso on Apple TV+. When last we left Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), she was dealing with the realization that yet another one of psychic Tish’s (Emma Davies) strange predictions had come true. She had been holding tightly onto a green matchbook — a gift from Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) — when she heard her ex’s new fiancée refer to the man as her “shite in knining armor.” However, the big part of the prophecy seems to have come true in Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 6 “Sunflowers.” Rebecca finds herself upside down, covered in water, but safe, and suddenly in the care of a handsome mystery Dutch man played by Matteo van der Grijn.
What does Rebecca’s blissfully cozy night in this mystery dude’s houseboat mean for the ongoing Ted Lasso “Rebecca Prophecy”? Do the sparks that flew between Rebecca and single Dutch daddy mean that there’s no hope for Rebecca and Ted (Jason Sudeikis)? And who is Matteo van der Grijn anyway? While we never learn the name of the Dutch stud who woos a canal-soaked Rebecca on his houseboat, the actor’s name is Matteo van der Grijn. The 42-year-old actor has appeared in a variety of Netherlands-based productions, including Levenslied, Tiramisu, and De troon. However, you might recognize him as Merk from Netflix’s Tribes of Europa.

When Rebecca sees Tish, the psychic, she is told that after the green matchbook and “shite in knining armor” episodes, there will be thunder and lightning and she will find herself upside and drenched, but safe. After that, Rebecca is told she will have a family. While we’ve yet to see a literal lightning storm, you could say that Rebecca may have felt proverbial lightning upon meeting her mystery man in Amsterdam. She certainly did find herself upside down and drenched! And he took every pain to make sure she felt safe.
Moreover, Rebecca is struck by how cozy her whole evening with this man is. From the warm meal he provides to the orgasmic foot massage. She wears one of his ex-wife’s dresses only to learn that he bought it. Rebecca and this guy have such a great night that she prolongs her stay on the houseboat by pouring water on her clothes after they’ve been laundered…so she can stay longer. While it seems they didn’t have sex, the two definitely kiss and it seems…fall in love?
Besides the fact that Rebecca’s mood is euphoric when she returns to the Richmond bus, there are additional clues that this guy could be the man for our girl. She is happy to discover his daughter’s pink room on his boat; this could mean she would be a mother via stepmothering. Also when Rebecca tells him she’ll never forget him, he says she might because people get Alzheimer’s. It’s a dark joke, sure, but the idea is they’ve imprinted on each other so much that only a debilitating illness that causes memory loss could break them apart now.
There’s also the fact that because we don’t know much about this guy, there could be a lot more to recommend him. Maybe he’s incredibly wealthy or a secret royal?? (You’re telling me a retired military officer could afford a houseboat THAT nice?)
Of course, the fact that we don’t even know his name also suggests that this could have been merely a single encounter designed to show Rebecca the joy of keeping hope, love, and curiosity alive in her heart. You know, so she can see the rest of her life in a new way…
First of all, Rebecca doesn’t even know this mystery man’s name! Nor he hers! There are no phone numbers exchanged or plans to meet up. This could be the end of the road!!!
Also, throughout Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 6 “Sunflowers,” Ted was eager to hang out with Rebecca. Keeley (Juno Temple) and Higgins (Jeremy Swift) might have ditched Rebecca for their own plans, but Ted was almost pining for her. So much so that when they finally reunited, he needed to make sure they were totally cool. (They were, but she had lost her Apple-branded iPhone in a canal and was being pampered by a hot Dutchman.)
Furthermore, Rebecca isn’t the only person who experiences a mental and spiritual reboot in Amsterdam. While Rebecca is learning the virtues of embracing joy, Ted goes on a (possibly drug-fueled?) adventure that helps him overcome his severe case of coaching block. Sure, his big idea is merely “Total Football,” a strategy Beard (Brendan Hunt) explains was created in the Netherlands in the ’70s, but it’s a good idea for Richmond! Ted is doing what Rebecca has been begging him all season: putting her boys first!
So maybe it’s not the end for Tedbecca, but only the beginning.
There are six episodes left in Ted Lasso Season 3, so anything could happen…
