Ted Danson shared a touching moment with his former Cheers co-star Kelsey Grammer after he formally apologized for a longstanding feud they’ve reportedly had for over 30 years.
“This isn’t self-deprecating, but it’s — I feel like I got stuck a little bit with you during the ‘Cheers’ years. I have a memory of getting angry at you once,” Danson told Grammer on a recent episode of the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, which he co-hosts with his Cheers co-star Woody Harrelson.
The co-stars did not get into specifics about the feud, but Grammer replied, “Yeah, you came and told me that one day.”
“And it’s stuck in both of our memories,” Danson continued. “But I feel like, f***, I don’t know. I missed out on the last 30 years of Kelsey Grammer and I feel like it’s my bad, my doing, and I almost feel like apologizing to you.”
He added, “I apologize to you and me that I sat back, you know, and didn’t, and I really do apologize.”
Grammer then shared a hilarious memory from his 40th birthday that he said he’s held onto over the years.
“You said something wonderful to me though, too, that I’ve always, I quote to other people,” Grammer told Danson. “When I turned 40, you came up and you said, ‘You know what it means, don’t you? Now that you’re 40, it means you’re finally worth having a conversation with.’”
After the Cheers co-stars shared a laugh, Grammer continued, “That was f***ing brilliant. I always loved that. And I’ve repeated it.”
He seemingly accepted Danson’s apology and told his former co-star, “And my love for you has always been as easy as the day. You know, as easy as the sunrise,” to which Danson said replied, “Mine to you.”
Danson helmed the hit NBC sitcom, which starred the Good Place actor as a former Boston Red Sox pitcher who opens a sports bar. Grammer later joined the cast in the third season, debuting his iconic character Dr. Frasier Crane, who later received his own NBC spinoff series that was recently revived on Paramount+.
The stars reflected on the special time they shared on the show, which lasted from 1982 to 1993.
“What an amazing thing that we, that time we all spent together,” Danson told his former co-stars. “You can go off in different directions, you can have different lives, but that bond, that love of making something really funny and really good and cracking each other up and going through life and still showing up.”
