Call it coincidence. Call it intelligence. Call it fate. Or simply call it the luck of the Irish.
In the case of Paul McGinley and the Ryder Cup, it’s likely all of the above.
McGinley, 58 years old and a native of Ireland, has never been part of a losing Ryder Cup team. He played on three winning teams (2002, 2004 and 2006) and delivered the Cup-clinching point in ’02 at the Belfry in England.
He was a vice captain on the 2010 and 2012 European teams — both winners — and he captained the 2014 team that routed the U.S. side controversially captained by Tom Watson, 16½ to 11½.
