While Sydney Sweeney‘s Saturday Night Live hosting debut may have been blasted for focusing on her body, cast member Bowen Yang thinks the Anyone But You star understood the assignment.
While speaking with SNL alums Dana Carvey and David Spade on their Fly on the Wall podcast, Yang reflected on Sweeney’s appearance, describing her as “an example of a host who came in and understood how she was being consumed and perceived already,” per Deadline.
“She came in and was like, ‘Please, everyone, make jokes about my boobs,'” he recalled. “She was practically begging everybody.”
Even before Sweeney hosted on March 2, the promo for her episode, which featured Sweeney, musical guest Kacey Musgraves, and SNL cast member Heidi Gardner, caught some flak from critics online.
“Girl power! Love this group of three strong ladies. I bet so many women are gonna tune in this weekend,” Gardner had said in the promo video.
Sweeney added, “Weirdly, a lot of my fans are men,” to which Musgraves quipped, “Hm. I wonder why.”

Some the sketches that Sweeney took part in included “Bowen’s Straight” and “Hooters Waitress,” the last of which Chloe Fineman claimed she pitched to Sweeney during an appearance on Carvey and Spade’s podcast in May.
“Sydney Sweeney, I pitched her the Hooters idea, where I was like, maybe work at Hooters, and we’re counting tips,” she recalled. “I get $20 and you’re like, cool, I made like $40,000. And then she DM’d me to write it, and then we got in so much trouble for, like, sexualizing Sydney Sweeney.”
She added, “But it was your pervert over here!”
Saturday Night Live Season 50 premieres on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 11:30 p.m. ET/ 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.
