Sydney Sweeney stars as FBI whistleblower Reality Winner in the new HBO movie Reality.

The film, which is based on a true story, adapts Tina Satter’s 2019 play Is This A Room, which had its off-Broadway premiere at Vineyard Theatre in New York City. The playwright adapted the work for the screen, serving as the co- writer and director of Reality

Sweeney stars as 25-year-old former American intelligence specialist Reality Winner as she is confronted by the FBI for her suspected role in the leak of classified documents to the news website The Intercept about Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election.

Winner was sentenced to five years and three months in federal prison for violating the Espionage Act.

In response, the outlet admitted error in their handling of the documents after it was suggested that the reporting led to Winner’s prosecution. Winner was released from prison in June 2021.

The HBO trailer is roughly a minute in length and features a teary-eyed Sweeney looking into the camera as glimpses of the FBI searching through her belongings is shown through quick flashes.

“Why do I have this job if I’m going to be helpless?” Sweeney’s character asks in a voiceover.

Josh Hamilton and Marchánt Davis also star in the movie.

Reality will premiere at 10/9c May 29 on HBO and will be available to stream on the new Warner Bros. Discovery platform, Max, which will soon replace HBO Max. Watch the full trailer above.
