NextImg:Superman actor Dean Cain supports ‘bravery’ of boy kicked out of class for Gadsden flag: ‘Good job’

Superman’s got your back, kid.

Actor Dean Cain– who starred as the Man of Steel in the 1990s series “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” — cheered 12-year-old Jaiden Rodriguez, the Colorado middle schooler who was booted from the classroom over a Gadsden flag affixed to his backpack.

“Good job, Jaiden,” Cain wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “It takes bravery to stand alone for what is right.”

Jaiden was told this week he couldn’t attend class at the Vanguard School until he removed from his bag a patch featuring the phrase “Don’t Tread on Me” and a coiled snake on a yellow background.

Video footage of the Bizarro encounter between the boy’s mother and an administrator was posted on X on Tuesday and went viral faster than a speeding bullet.

In the clip, the administrator at the public charter school claimed that Jaiden could not wear the patch because of its “origins with slavery and the slave trade.”

The boy’s mother, Eden Rodriguez, however, argued that the flag’s origins could actually be traced to the Revolutionary War, not slavery — although the school claimed Jaiden had also been in violation of the dress code for additional patches on his bag, including one displaying semi-automatic weapons.

The video sparked public outrage, with the state’s Democratic governor Jared Polis weighing in to defend the boy.

“The Gadsden flag is a proud symbol of the American Revolution and an iconic warning to Britain or any government not to violate the liberties of Americans,” Polis wrote.

“It appears on popular American medallions and challenge coins through today and Ben Franklin also adopted it to symbolize the union of the 13 colonies. It’s a great teaching moment for a history lesson!”

Following the public outrage, the Vanguard School Board of Directors called an emergency meeting and reversed its decision, allowing Jaiden to return to the classroom with the Gadsden flag on display.

“The Vanguard School recognizes the historical significance of the Gadsden flag and its place in history,” the board wrote in an email to parents. “This incident is an occasion for us to reaffirm our deep commitment to a classical education in support of these American principles.

In recent years, the Gadsden flag has become a symbol for the Tea Party movement and increasingly associated with conservative politics.

In 2016, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission investigated a US Postal Service employee complaint about a co-worker wearing a Gadsden flag hat and ruled that the flag itself is not a racist symbol, yet is “sometimes interpreted to convey racially-tinged messages in some contexts.”
