It’s been a week of hot takes from Sunny Hostin on The View, and she resumed her role as table contrarian on today’s episode when she boldly dared to question Time magazine’s choice to put Taylor Swift on their Person of the Year cover.

Whoopi Goldberg, who introduced the topic of Swift’s latest achievement, applauded Time for making “a really good choice,” but not everyone at the table shared her opinion. While Goldberg and Joy Behar praised Swift’s impact on the nation’s economy and her efforts to get young people to vote, Hostin was more hesitant about bestowing her with the Person of the Year honor.

Hostin said that while she thinks Swift is “an incredible performer, and a humanist and philanthropist,” she noted that other people like the Hollywood strikers and the Trump prosecutors — who she said “may be able to save our democracy” — were also up for the award.

“If the motto for the magazine is, ‘The person or persons who most affected the news and our lives’… I was a little struck by it,” she said. But before she could continue, Goldberg stopped her, telling Hostin, “We have sat at this table and talked about this girl and everything she’s done for most of the year.”

Hostin insisted, “I’m not taking anything away from her … I’m just saying, I was surprised at it,” but Goldberg wasn’t letting her off easy. She replied, “No, it’s no different than, you know, they’ve done this with various performers. They give it to the person who has had the impact. Her impact has been startling.”

When Hostin reminded her that year’s Person of the Year was Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, Goldberg shot back, “Yes, well, she had as much of an impact,” but Hostin carried on, naming 2021’s Person of the Year Elon Musk.

“I’m sorry, he would not have been my man of the year!” Goldberg quipped. “He was the man of the year because he was a bonehead.”

All we can say is, good luck facing off against the Swifties, Sunny. You’re one brave woman.

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
