Sunny Hostin candidly opened up about receiving hate emails, revealing that she’s “not liked by half the country” on this morning’s episode of The View.
While speaking about John Mulaney‘s new comedy special Baby J and how the comedian discusses falling into “likability jail” — where people believe his fun persona despite having a “messy” personal life — Hostin noted that people “thought they knew him because he was a famous person.”
Though she reminded the audience that they don’t personally know people acting in movies, Hostin didn’t necessarily believe that the same sentiment applies to her and her fellow public figure co-hosts Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro.
“I think that people maybe know us a little bit more because our job is to share things that go on in our personal lives,” she said. “We’re not acting.”
Hostin continued, “But for people to kind of think that they know you — and people think that they know everything about us. And I get emails … oof. I’m not liked by half the country.”
When the lawyer revealed that she receives emails about how “horrible” she is, Behar quipped, “I’ll stop sending them,” to which Hostin jokingly played along as she replied, “Thank you, Joy. Because they’re hurtful.”
With Behar assuring viewers that it was just a joke, Hostin added, “That was just my point — you don’t really ever know someone who’s a celebrity.”
Meanwhile, Behar — who was stepping in as moderator in Goldberg’s absence — turned to the show’s executive producer Brian Teta to clear up any misconceptions America might have about the ladies.
“They always ask Brian, ‘What’re they really like?’ And what do you say doll face?” she innocently asked Teta, before he said, “Just turn on the television, they’re exactly the same when it’s not on.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
