Sunny Hostin called out the “hypocrisy” of pro-life Christians who claim to be against abortion but are in support of other controversial topics like the death penalty and the right to own guns.
On this morning’s episode of The View, the ladies discussed Pope Leo XIV’s recent remarks regarding divisive issues in American politics. Like Hostin, Pope Leo—the first American Pope who was elected to the papacy in May following the death of Pope Francis—questioned whether someone can truly claim they are pro-life while simultaneously standing for the death penalty, or the harsh way in which immigrants are being treated by the Trump administration in the United States.
“I am at least consistent,” Hostin said. “As a lifelong Catholic, I’m against abortion. I’m also against the death penalty. I’m also against guns. I’m also against the starvation of children. I’m a humanitarian above all because I believe that all life is precious.”
Joy Behar chimed in to question whether Hostin was against the penalty “in all cases” because, according to the comedian, “some people really deserve to get it.” But Hostin doubled down that she is always against the death penalty.

“I find there is a hypocrisy with certain Christians who are ‘pro-life’ but they will pull that electric chair switch, they are ‘pro-life’ but they have their AR-15s in their cabinet, they are ‘pro-life’ but they don’t mind immigrant families being torn from each other, they are ‘pro-life’ but they don’t care about little children’s subsidies being taken from them,” she said. “That is not pro-life.”
At the end of the segment, Hostin reminded viewers, “You can have your own beliefs and not push them onto other people,” a statement that Whoopi Goldberg made her repeat twice for the people in the back.
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
