Succession Season 4 Episode 6 “Living+” might have focused on Kendall’s (Jeremy Strong) make-it-or-break-it moment at a Waystar RoyCo Investor’s Day, but Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) stole the show. Last week, it seemed that the divorcing couple were still definitely attracted to each other. The two engaged in some gleeful hate-flirting at the GoJo retreat — with Tom noting Shiv’s “chewy” earlobes — and Shiv actually asking Tom for dinner. Now, the two separated spouses have seemingly, maybe, potentially gotten back together. At least Tom and Shiv definitely had sex, are looping each other in on their strategies, and, most notably, played “bitey.”

Yeah, the big thing Tom and Shiv got up to wasn’t scheming against her brothers and Matsson, though that seemed to be happening, nor sharing their amorous feelings for each other, though that also sort of happened? The headline is that Shiv introduced Tom to a messed up, horny game of chicken called “bitey”…and it’s the weirdest, grossest, and most sexually in synch Tom and Shiv have ever been.

So what exactly is “bitey?” How do you play bitey? And are Tom and Shiv back on? Here’s what we saw when we watched Succession Season 4 Episode 6 “Living+” on HBO….

About halfway through tonight’s Succession, Tom and Shiv find themselves flirting at an LA party. Now, by “flirting,” I mean they’re getting off on arguing about who fucked the other one up more. Past lovers are dredged up in a clear attempt to stoke jealousy. Shiv mentions a game called “bitey” and when Tom doesn’t know what it is, she rubs it in that she thought she did it with him. The implication is it was a sex game with someone else.

Bitey, it turns out, is a public game where Shiv and her man interlace arms and bite one another. The first one who stops loses. Tom says he wants to do it and suddenly two adults are biting each other in the middle of a Hollywood party. Normal stuff!

What’s wild is that Tom and Shiv seem equally horned up by the fact that they are sadistically hurting one another in public. They both hold on for a beat longer than you’d expect and Shiv is honestly impressed with Tom’s performance.

Naturally, the next time we see the two, they are dressing themselves post-coitus. So Tom and Shiv banged. Does that mean they’re back on?

Weird that TV’s best “Will They? Won’t They” romance right now might be the smoldering chemistry between two spouses in the middle of divorce, but here we are. Ever since Tom and Shiv called it quits in the Succession Season 4 premiere, it’s been weird to see the couple’s chemistry crackle onscreen like never before. Shiv seems turned on by a more cold and ruthless Tom and Tom has never been more honest with his wife.

In this week’s episode, the two not only hooked up after their game of bitey, but they also shared several emotional and professional moments. First, Tom mistakenly walks in on Shiv in an office without realizing she had the room booked for her daily cry. When he realizes she’s scheduling her grief, he comforts her and they kiss.

Later, after their post-bitey sex, Tom reveals he does want Shiv back. She retorts that he shouldn’t have betrayed her then. He then candidly reveals, “I really love money.” Tom explains that because Shiv always kept him walled off, he became nervous he would be cut off from the opportunities for wealth that would have been afforded him were he closer to Logan. When he challenges Shiv by half-jokingly asking her to run away with him to a trailer park — a gambit to show Shiv she also cares about money — she oddly says she’d follow him anywhere.

The next we see them, he’s quietly sitting in on Shiv’s call with Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard) and the Swede doesn’t know he’s there. Matsson clearly wants Shiv as his main Roy ally, and maybe something more. The fact that Shiv is inviting Tom in on these secret conversations highlights how her ex-husband is now back in her trusted circle.

At the end of the episode, while they are sharing a car, Tom floats the idea again that they can co-host a party together. Shiv agrees, but so they can strategize. Tom warns he finds strategy sexy and Shiv smiles to herself.

It seems Shiv’s not fully willing to take Tom back, but she basically has. As Tom himself pointed out, Shiv likes to keep every option open. She clearly isn’t ready to fully commit herself back to Tom…even if it seems that she’s pregnant with his child.

We’re guessing this dynamic will only become more deliciously complex in Succession‘s final weeks.

(Anyway, Kendall might have impressed the investors with Living+, but lying about the numbers and using a deep fake of his dad are choices that are totally going to blow up in his face, right? Right?)
