NextImg:Struggling Jordan Montgomery claims Scott Boras ‘kind of butchered’ his lengthy free agency

Jordan Montgomery called out his former agent Scott Boras for his disastrous free agency last offseason.

The Diamondbacks left-hander was reportedly interested in signing with the pitching-hungry Red Sox over the winter, but instead signed a one-year, $25-million deal just before Opening Day to head to Arizona.

“I had a Zoom call with (the Red Sox), that’s really all I know. It went good,” Montgomery said, according to the Boston Herald. “I don’t know, obviously Boras kind of butchered it, so I’m just trying to move on from the offseason and try to forget it.”

Just a few weeks after signing with the Diamondbacks, Montgomery parted ways with Boras, jumping over to Wasserman, a rival baseball agency.

Montgomery was one of four Boras clients — alongside Blake Snell, Matt Chapman and Cody Bellinger — who signed late in the offseason.

He had been expecting to cash in on what was one of the best seasons of his career in 2023, posting a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts during the regular season before dominating in the postseason (2.90 ERA, 31 innings) for the World Series-winning Rangers.

It’s been a miserable 2024 season in the desert for the 31-year-old southpaw.

Montgomery has a 6.44 ERA in 19 starts, prompting the Diamondbacks to move him to the bullpen on Friday to give right-hander Ryne Nelson a spot in their starting rotation.

He also didn’t make his debut until April 19 after missing spring training and missed a month with knee inflammation.

Montgomery has a vesting option worth $22.5 million.

If he makes four more starts, getting to 23 total starts, it vests at $25 million.
