The Duffer Brothers want us to know that they didn’t really want Millie Bobby Brown, anyway! The writers of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things have shut down rumors that Brown turned down over $10 million to star in a spin-off series.
Earlier this week, The Daily Mail reported that Brown allegedly turned down £10 million — which converts to roughly $12 million — to star in a Stranger Things spin-off because she wants to “branch out” into other roles.
The outlet cited The Sun as their source, however the linked article has since been deleted. The article also claimed that details about the alleged spin-off series are being kept under wraps.
On Wednesday (March 22), writers for the popular science fiction series took to Twitter to debunk the rumors. They commented on a tweet made by The Daily Mail, sharing the aforementioned article, writing, “Yeah there’s nothing in this article that is true. Don’t know why we have to keep debunking this rumor but get those clicks you guys!!”
The sassy response has garnered more attention than The Daily Mail’s original tweet, with many fans praising the writers for their transparency and takedown of misleading information.
Brown has starred as Eleven in the Netflix series since its debut in 2016. The role is credited as her breakout and has earned her two Primetime Emmy nominations and four Screen Actors Guild Award nominations; she won one SAG award, which she shares with the ensemble of the series.
Following her debut in Stranger Things, Brown went on to star in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and lead the Enola Holmes franchise as the title character. Brown reprised her role in all four seasons of Stranger Things and will be starring in the fifth and final season.
In July 2022, it was announced that co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer are launching Upside Down Pictures to spearhead a variety of major projects, including a Stranger Things spin-off and a stage musical.
Brown has not commented on these allegations, but did speak with Seventeen earlier this month about leaving the franchise.
“I’m definitely ready to wrap up. I feel like there’s a lot of the story that’s been told now, and we know of it, it’s been in our lives for a very long time. But I’m very ready to say goodbye to this chapter of my life and open new ones up,” she said at the time. “I’m able to create stories myself that are important to me and focus on the bigger picture. But I’m really grateful [for the show].”
Stranger Things is now streaming on Netflix.
