The internet works fast, but Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels works faster.

Amid the growing online chatter calling for Steve Martin to play Kamala Harris‘ new running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Martin confirmed that he’s already spoken to Michaels about the job and ultimately decided to decline the offer.

“I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no,” Martin told the Los Angeles Times. “I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.’ I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses.”

The Only Murders in the Building star confessed that he felt like he would struggle to play Walz in a regular role on SNL when it returns this fall.

“It’s ongoing,” Martin explained. “It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again. Again, they need a real impressionist to do that. They’re gonna find somebody really, really good. I’d be struggling.”

But he certainly seemed to see the striking resemblance when he made a post on Threads in which he joked, “I just learned that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short.”

If he had taken the job, Martin would be joining SNL alum Maya Rudolph, who is already set to reprise her role as Harris when the show returns in September.

Martin’s statement has some merit to it, as it appears that Rudolph will be making regular appearances on SNL through the presidential election after the new season premieres in this fall.

Rudolph even pushed back production on Season 4 of her Apple TV+ series Loot. Production was reportedly set to begin Aug. 26, but cast and crew were notified that the start date had been pushed back due to scheduling reasons, per Deadline. Considering Loot shoots in Los Angeles and SNL films in New York City, Rudolph would likely have to temporarily relocate for the show.

Now, production on Loot is expected to begin in January 2025.

A source with knowledge of Rudolph’s plans told CNN that SNL producers had “immediate interest” in getting the star back to reprise her role.

It remains to be seen who will be joining Rudolph to play Harris’ running mate. Vanity Fair reports that other favorites to play Walz on SNL include Al Franken, Jim Gaffigan, and Jim O’Heir.

While cast member James Austin Johnson is expected to reprise his role as Donald Trump, it remains to be seen who will play Trump’s running mate J.D. Vance.
