NextImg:Steve Gelbs interrupted by completely shocked fan in hilarious SNY TV spot

SNY Mets reporter Steve Gelbs is known to get up to food-related hijinks from time to time during a broadcast, and that was the case on Wednesday night during the Mets’ 5-3 loss to the Rangers.

And this time, it included an unsuspecting guest during his spot.

During the second inning, the SNY cameras zoomed in on Gelbs sitting in a chair in the stands of Globe Life Stadium while he was munching on a brisket sandwich.

The field reporter was unaware at first that he was on camera as broadcasters Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez poked fun at Gelbs from the comfort of the broadcast booth.

“What I want to see is if Steve can take a bite of the brisket and practice his play-by-play at the same time,” Cohen said jokingly before it then appeared that Gelbs wisened up about what was being said about him.

“I would watch that,” Cohen added.

That’s when Gelbs, who was still chewing, jumped onto his microphone and asked what Cohen had just said while an unassuming woman walked by the SNY reporter at the same time.

That’s when the situation really jumped off the rails as the woman thought Gelbs had been talking to her, not realizing he was live on television at the moment and actually talking to his broadcast partners.

She stopped right in front of Gelbs, who had to explain to her what was happening.

“No, no, not [you]. No I’m on TV right now — so are you,” Gelbs told the woman, who quickly tried to duck out of view of the camera.

“The look of shock on her face,” Cohen said as Hernandez laughed at the peculiar situation.

“And Steve making friends wherever he goes and freaking out the Texans.”

Gelbs later commented on the whole matter on X, writing, “Spreading the TV time to the masses.”

The Mets, whos seven-game winning streak was snapped, are off on Thursday before beginning a three-game series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday.
