Sterling K. Brown is the latest guest to fall victim to an emotional interview on The Drew Barrymore Show.
On this morning’s episode of host Drew Barrymore‘s eponymous daytime talk series, the This Is Us actor became teary-eyed as he opened up about his late father, who passed away when he was 10 years old.
The conversation came up shortly after Brown remembered the birth of his son, who came out unexpectedly early and rather quickly.
“You had a really strong relationship with your father,” Barrymore pointed out. “When you’re having a moment like that and you’re this father who literally just gave birth to your child, do you think about him in that moment?”
Brown paused for a moment as his eyes glossed over, telling the actress, “Don’t you do that, Drew Barrymore.”
After collecting himself, the American Fiction star confirmed that he did, in fact, think of his father when his wife gave birth to their children.
“Sterling Brown Jr. is my dad and I love him very much. He passed away when I was 10, almost 11,” he explained. “But I have this reservoir of love that is just a deep well inside of me and I get a chance to share that with these two beautiful boys that I have right now.”

According to Brown, he bonded with his father by watching movies and television shows like The Fall Guy, Fantasy Island and The Love Boat before his death.
“If he didn’t love it the way that he did, I probably wouldn’t be doing it,” Brown admitted. “I think on a conscious or subconscious level, I do things to feel connected to my dad.”
After recalling the day his family got “all four” channels on cable, Brown added, “It was just good times. It was such a warm feeling of he loves me and he wants to share this thing with me. The fact that I get to do this thing that he loved so much, I feel his smile all the time.”
