Stephen Colbert played his role as “America’s Dad” when Selena Gomez paid a visit to The Late Show this week to promote her new Netflix drama, Emilia Perez.

Colbert had been sharing photos from Gomez and Benny Blanco‘s Thanksgiving dinner when he sprung the question on her, “Where is this relationship going?”

Gomez was visibly shocked as she responded, “Woah. I thought you were going to ask where was this picture taken?”

But Gomez collected herself to answer, “You know what, I’m not sure, but I’m having a great time.”

Colbert then asked if Blanco was possibly watching from home, before he turned to the camera and addressed the music producer directly. “Benny,” he said towards the camera.

“Oh no,” Gomez said.

“You must think you’re pretty special, if you think you can do better than this, okay?” Colbert began, causing Gomez to laugh. “And as America’s dad, I want to know what your intentions are with America’s daughter right over here?”

Gomez appeared thoroughly shocked by the interaction as she laughed. “Oh my god,” she said. “Thank you.”

Colbert then turned back to her and said, “No charge for that,” before asking, “But it’s a good relationship?”

“Oh yeah,” Gomez said. She then praised her boyfriend’s cooking skills, noting he “cooks every meal. It’s fantastic.”

Colbert later switched sides, asking Gomez, “What are your intentions with him?”

Blanco and Gomez, who met when they worked together on some music in 2015, began dating in July 2023; the pair have been open about how well things seem to be going in their relationship.

“I’ve never been loved this way,” Gomez said in a Vanity Fair profile in September. “He’s just been a light. A complete light in my life. He’s my best friend. I love telling him everything.”
