NextImg:Stefanie Dolson’s unlikely hot hand off bench rallies Liberty past Sparks

The last time Stefanie Dolson hit five or more 3-pointers in a game, she was a fourth-year player in 2017, a season when she earned her second — and most recent — All-Star appearance with the Chicago Sky.

Dolson was still five years from joining the Liberty, where she’d become a reliable starter and then a near-afterthought as the superteam was formed.

Dolson was never a 3-point specialist either. Nothing had changed this season, as she’d made four 3-pointers total entering Thursday night.

But then Dolson hit some of the Liberty’s most pivotal 3-pointers of their entire season in a 96-89 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks (16-23) at Barclays Center.

Dolson finished with a season-high 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting — including 5-for-5 from beyond the arc — off the bench as the Liberty (32-7) erased a 14-point deficit to keep their chances for the WNBA’s No. 1 seed intact.

They got 25 points from Breanna Stewart, an expected contribution at this point, and 20 from Betnijah Laney.

But it was the shots from Dolson in the second half, one of which helped give the Liberty their first lead since the opening quarter, that propelled them to their latest victory.

Their bench erupted as Dolson hit shot after shot from beyond the arc.

She saluted the crowd from the bench after exiting. The 31-year-old former UConn star couldn’t help but laugh when everything connected.

She was always open — the defensive consequence of the Liberty having so many offensive threats — and her Liberty teammates kept feeding her the ball.

Dolson’s first 3-pointer came with 2:22 left in the third quarter, and it pulled the Liberty within 69-64.

They were only down by two after the opening 10 minutes, but the Liberty’s offense managed just three baskets in the first five minutes of the second quarter.

They surrendered 50 points in the opening 20 minutes.

That created the 14-point deficit, as the Sparks kept hitting shots (50 percent from the field overall, 54.5 percent on 3-pointers).

But the Liberty started their comeback in the third quarter.

Sabrina Ionescu, after going 0-for-8 in the first half, hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points.

Early in the fourth quarter, though, the Liberty still trailed.

Dolson made another 3-pointer to cut their deficit to 74-72. Her next one gave the Liberty a one-point lead.

She connected on two more before exiting — giving her four makes in the first 2:37 of the frame — and the final shot gave the Liberty a lead they’d never relinquish.

The Liberty kept doing everything they could to close the gap with the Aces at the top of the WNBA standings, but they were, and still are, running out of time.

The Aces — the defending champs who were one game ahead of the Liberty entering the night — have kept winning.

Even a convincing victory over Las Vegas on Aug. 28 could only accomplish part of what they needed.

And then the Liberty nearly made a mistake Thursday. But Dolson, their veteran and one of the remaining pieces from the pre-superteam era, made sure their quest for the No. 1 seed remains, at the very least, a possibility entering the final few days of the season.
