The Steelers’ Week 2 win over the Browns came at a cost for running back Jaylen Warren.
He was handed a $48,333 fine for illegal use of a helmet on Saturday, just ahead of Pittsburgh’s Week 3 clash with the Raiders, according to NFL Network.
Warren caught a short pass from quarterback Kenny Pickett, adding a few yards after the catch down the left sideline to convert a third-and-3.
But as Browns safety Juan Thornhill angled toward Warren to tackle him, the latter lowered his helmet and thrust it toward Thornhill, though it appeared Thornhill lowered his head as well.
The two collided heads as a result, and the force sent them both to the ground.
There was no flag called on the play.
“We are obviously appealing,” Warren’s agent David Canter posted on X (formerly Twitter) after news of the fine broke.
Formerly an undrafted free agent now in his second season with the Steelers, Warren is set to earn $870K as his base salary this year, per Spotrac, meaning he will lose roughly 5.5 percent of his salary from the fine if it stands.
Warren has nine carries this year for 26 rushing yards and has added nine receptions for 78 receiving yards as well.
As a rookie last year, Warren rushed for 379 yards and a touchdown on 77 carries and added 28 receptions for 214 receiving yards.
Some fans have called for Warren to see an increased workload as starter Najee Harris continues to struggle with just 74 rushing yards so far.
The Steelers’ offense has struggled as a whole this year, with 33 points scored this year — sixth-worst in the NFL.
Offensive coordinator Matt Canada has already heard “fire Canada” chants from fans despite the team owning a 1-1 record.
“They want us to play better,” Canada said earlier this week. “There’s nothing wrong with their passion and those things … We’re not running away from it. We expect to be better. We’re going to be better.
“I firmly believe that.”
