NextImg:Steelers’ Diontae Johnson, Minkah Fitzpatrick got into ‘heated’ locker room altercation after Browns loss

The Steelers’ locker room was shaken up this past week outside of the firing of offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

According to ESPN, two days prior to Canada’s firing, wide receiver Diontae Johnson and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick got into a “heated” argument after the 13-10 loss in Cleveland on Sunday before teammates Cameron Heyward and T.J. Watt broke up the fight and spoke up, saying they need to stick together as a team.

The loss, lack of offense and the outburst from Johnson’s frustrations was likely the tipping point that eventually led to the Steelers’ first in-season coaching change since 1941.

Quarterback Kenny Pickett threw for 106 yards for zero touchdowns last week.

Johnson only had two receptions for 16 yards against the Browns and appeared to be upset, having an animated discussion with head coach Mike Tomlin.

The outburst, per ESPN, included Johnson “chirping” at the coaches after the game and into the locker room, where Fitzpatrick eventually began arguing with the wide receiver.

Heyward and Watt prevented the situation from escalating into something worse before they spoke to the locker room along with Tomlin.

According to ESPN, the team has been able to move past the situation and it did not carry over into the practices and preparation for the Bengals on Sunday at 1 p.m.

For the remainder of the season, running backs coach Eddie Faulkner will take over as the new offensive coordinator and the game-day play-caller will be quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan.

“You hate to see it,” Pickett told reporters earlier this week. “You don’t want to see one of your coaches lose their job. We all got to be better.”

“I couldn’t say enough good about Matt Canada,” Faulkner said. “It’s a little bit bittersweet in that way because when you sit back and you see all that goes on, and all that’s being said about him and the offense, we all — and I’m speaking for the offense when I say this to staff — we all felt that we’re all part of that. Nobody’s absolving themselves from anything that’s happened in that regard. We feel like we let him down.”

Under Canada as coordinator, the Steelers never surpassed 400 yards on offense in his 45-game career, including the playoffs. The 31 other NFL teams hit that benchmark at least four times each in that stretch.
