St. John’s basketball jumped to No. 7 in the Associated Press top-25 poll, marking the highest the Red Storm have been in the poll in 33 years and even longer since they’ve been ranked this high this late in the season. 

The jump comes after the Red Storm’s big win over DePaul and a statement win over UConn last week.

At 15-2 in Big East play, St. John’s has matched the amount of wins it had in 1984-85, when it went on to win the league outright and made the NCAA tournament.

The six-week run in the national poll is the program’s longest since it spend 16 weeks being ranked in 1998-99, reaching as high as No. 8.

The Red Storm has now attained the No. 7 spot for the first time since the early weeks of the 1991-92 season – the same year they won a share of the Big East season title. 

Even more notable is the fact that the Johnnies haven’t been ranked this high on March 1 since 1986 when Walter Berry and Mark Jackson led the Red Storm to a Big East Tournament title.

And in the program’s history dating back to 1907, St. John’s ranked inside the top 10 in March just six times previously.
