NextImg:Spurs mascot in Batman costume catches real bat on court in bizarre scene

The Caped Crusader wasn’t in Gotham on Saturday night, but he made his presence known in San Antonio.

And he caught one of his own in a hilarious moment in the Spurs’ 113-112 win over the Timberwolves.

It might not have been the real Batman, but The Coyote — San Antonio’s mascot — came ready, literally in a Dark Knight costume and a net in hand to try and catch a real bat when it made its way onto the court.

Less than two minutes into the game, the bat was seen flying around, and The Coyote was on the prowl, and the Frost Bank Center DJ came ready with the “Batman” theme from the 1960s TV show that starred Adam West in the titular role.

After some laps around the floor, the bat went back near where The Coyote was standing, and the mascot caught the creature in the net against the floor.

To a great ovation, The Coyote raised his arms to the crowd in a move akin to Russell Crowe in “Gladiator.”

The Spurs players were sure entertained and happy as Devin Vassell gave the mascot a huge hug while super rookie Victor Wembanyama dapped up The Coyote, too.

In pretty fitting fashion, Spurs legend Manu Ginóbili — who swatted a bat down in San Antonio in 2009 — was in the building.

But this time, he was not needed.

The Coyote has some experience catching bats in the arena, however, as twice in 2019 the the Spurs saw a bat fly around the venue.

While staff in the building were unsuccessful the first time — during a January 2019 game against the Nets — in catching one, The Coyote, in a similar fashion as this Saturday, caught a bat on a second try on Feb. 2, 2019.

The Coyote wasn’t on the stat sheet for this nail-biter win over Minnesota, but his unofficial assist had the crowd plenty excited.
