The sports world paid tribute to a heavy metal icon on Tuesday.
Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary Prince of Darkness, died at the age of 76 on Tuesday, and kind words quickly poured out for the larger-than-life singer.
“Aston Villa Football Club is saddened to learn that world-renowned rockstar and Villan, Ozzy Osbourne, has passed away,” the team wrote on social media. Growing up in Aston, not far from Villa Park, Ozzy always held a special connection to the club and the community he came from. The thoughts of everyone at Aston Villa are with his wife Sharon, his family, friends, and countless fans at this extremely difficult time. Rest in peace, Ozzy.”
Osbourne’s famous “Crazy Train” song served as the Patriots’ intro song during the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick dynasty days, which the team thanked him for.
“The New England Patriots are saddened to learn of the passing of music legend Ozzy Osbourne, who provided the iconic intro for Patriots games for over 20 years,” the franchise wrote. “Condolences to his family and all who mourn his loss.”
Baseball Hall of Famer Chipper Jones, who used “Crazy Train” as his walkup song, also took to social media to recognize Osbourne.
“Saddened to hear of the passing of Ozzy Osbourne today,” Jones wrote on X. “I feel Ozzy and I will forever be linked due to his song, ‘Crazy Train’! Quick story…..Facing the Mets at home….I walk to the plate and say ‘Hey Mike (Piazza), how’s it going?’ He says, ‘I’m doing fine Larry, but I hate this f–king song!’ I said ‘ Well, get ready cuz ur gonna hear about 5 times today!’ Pretty funny ……Rest easy Ozzy!”
In 1984, Osbourne was arrested for public intoxication while wearing a St. Louis Blues jersey.
The Blues’ X account replied to Osbourne’s post wearing a Blues sweater from when the team was in the Stanley Cup Final in 2019 after his passing on Tuesday, writing, “St. Louis loves you, Ozzy. RIP.”
Osbourne died Tuesday “surrounded by love,” his family said in a statement to The Post.
“It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.”
In January 2020, Osbourne announced that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
The rock star returned to the stage one last time earlier this month to perform with Black Sabbath for the band’s final concert in Osbourne’s hometown of Birmingham.
