Use this story as a cautionary tale the next time you want to cash out a bet.
A FanDuel Sportsbook bettor missed out on a potentially life-changing payday of over $71,000 when they decided to cash out their three-leg futures parlay early.
The parlay included three championship bets: the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Super Bowl, UConn to win the National Championship and the Denver Nuggets to win the NBA Finals.
It would appear the cash out happened soon after the Chiefs defeated the Eagles in February.
But once the UConn Huskies smashed the competition en route to a March Madness National Championship, this bettor has probably been unable to sleep for several weeks.
Now the final leg sits with the Nuggets, who are massive -320 favorites to win the NBA Championship – the largest odds disparity in the Finals since 2017, when the Cavaliers faced the Kevin Durant-led Warriors as -1000 favorites.
Whether Denver wins the NBA Finals is irrelevant primarily because, at the minimum, the bettor would be wise to hedge this bet on Miami, potentially guaranteeing him or herself $30,000 or more.
Cashing out is almost always the wrong decision.
You are far better off hedging when possible instead of cashing out, where you’ll come out losing more often than not.
Hopefully, that $100 was used to take a loved one out for dinner.
