More than a decade after first listing her Central Park West penthouse for $50 million, Susan Weber, the 69-year-old ex-wife of billionaire George Soros, 92, is finally in contract to sell it for less than what she bought it for.
The sprawling 6,000-square-foot duplex was last asking $24.5 million — less than half its original asking price in 2012. Weber bought the apartment for $25 million in 2006; StreetEasy shows the listing bounced on and off the market with steadily decreasing asking prices.
The deal comes as Weber’s son Alexander Soros was just tapped by his father to take over his $25 billion fortune, including its nonprofit Open Society Foundation. Weber was once executive director of the Open Society Institute. She is also founder and director of the Bard Graduate Center for studies in the decorative Arts, design history and material culture.
The five-bedroom home is at 115 Central Park West, aka the Majestic. The penthouse comes with nearly 900 square feet of outdoor space and stunning Central Park views. It opens from a private elevator landing to a corner living room, a great room/open chef’s kitchen — and a terrace with views of the park, the San Remo and Fifth Avenue. A main bedroom suite boasts park views, a home office, two dressing rooms, a spa-like bath and a terrace.
The 29-story, twin-towered Art Deco co-op building at 72nd Street, across from the Dakota, dates to 1929. Building amenities include a gym, a playroom, a rooftop solarium and a terrace, bike storage and storage bins.
Listing brokers Lisa K. Lippman and Gerard “Scott” Moore of Brown Harris Stevens declined to comment.
