Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is zooming onto digital platforms this week, just one month after the movie opened in theaters.
Directed by Jeff Fowler—who also directed 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog and its 2022 sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2—this movie sees the return of everyone’s favorite animated hedgehog. Based on the video game series from Sega, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) teams up with his old buddies Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) and Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey) to face a new enemy, the ominous Shadow the Hedgehog (voiced by Keanu Reeves). Jim Carrey, of course, is back as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, as is James Marsden as Sonic’s adoptive father.
The third Sonic film made nearly $420 million at the worldwide box office, making it one of the top movies of 2024. But in this day-and-age, even big blockbusters are getting pushed to “premium” video-on-demand after just a month in theaters. Paramount likely hopes to make an extra chunk of change from people willing to pay $25 for a digital copy of the film.
But before you take out your wallet, you should know that Sonic 3 will like be streaming free to subscribers on Paramount+ very soon.
Beginning on Tuesday, January, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be available to buy digitally on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie costs $24.99 to buy, and $19.99 to rent. If you rent the movie, you’ll have 48 hours to watch the movie after you hit “play.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is not yet streaming on any subscription streaming services, but we do expect to see Sonic 3 streaming on Paramount+ soon, because it is a Paramount movie.
The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Paramount+ streaming date has not yet been announced. Right now, the movie is only available to buy and rent on digital. That said, we do expect to see Sonic 3 streaming on Paramount+ eventually, but we’re not sure when. Another recent Paramount film, Transformers One, was released in theaters on September 20; released on digital platforms one month after opening in theaters, on October 22; and began streaming on Paramount+ about two months after opening in theaters, on November 15.
If Sonic 3 follows a similar release pattern, you might see the movie streaming on Paramount+ around late February 2025.
But this is all speculation. If you want to watch Sonic 3 right away, you can buy or rent the film online.
