Eric Stonestreet said his “Modern Family” co-star, Sofia Vergara, previously dated a tight end on the Chiefs — and it wasn’t pal Travis Kelce, who is newly engaged to pop megstar Taylor Swift.
During a recent appearance on the “Like a Farmer Podcast,” Stonestreet, who is a diehard Chiefs fan, recalled Vergara telling him that she previously dated Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez.
It all started when host Pat Spinosa suggested that Vergara “might be dating” retired quarterback Tom Brady, adding, “That’s what was [reported] online,” as Page Six reported their “summer romance” in June.
“Well, really?” Stonestreet said. “I mean, I can find out, I guess. I don’t know. You know, she dated Tony Gonzalez years ago. That’s a great story.
“So when we first started hanging out and she’s getting to know me, and I’m wearing a lot of Chiefs stuff. She goes, ‘Eric, are you a Kansas fan?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’
“[She said], ‘I used to date a Chief.’ She didn’t say the word date. She goes, ‘I used to date a Chief.’ And I’m like, who? She’s like Tony Gonzalez, dummy.’
“I had no idea. I didn’t know who Sofia Vergara was when Tony Gonzalez was a Chief. I didn’t know that. But yeah, she used to date Tony Gonzalez way back when.”
The Pro Football Hall of Famer and his wife, “October “Tobie” Gonzalez, have four children.
Gonzalez and his ex-wife, Lauren Sánchez, are co-parents to son Nikko. He and October attended Sánchez’s wedding to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in June.
During his 12 seasons with the Chiefs, Gonzalez set franchise records for receptions (916), receiving yards (10,940), receiving touchdowns (76) and 100-yard games (26). He was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Honor in 2018.
Gonzalez, who retired from the NFL in 2013, joined FOX Sports prior to the start of the 2017 NFL season.
Vergara and Brady, who never addressed the buzz publicly, spent time together in Ibiza, Spain, this summer, according to Page Six.
They were pictured sitting together at an event aboard the Luminara superyacht, launched by the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, which set sail from Rome, Italy — with A-list guests including Martha Stewart, Naomi Campbell, Kendall Jenner, Kate Hudson, Colman Domingo, and Brady’s past supermodel fling, Irina Shayk.
Elsewhere in the podcast, Stonestreet discussed his Chiefs fandom and close ties to Kelce, saying the three-time Super Bowl champ “is so kind to my sister, so kind to my mom.”
The actor explained that things didn’t change when Kelce began dating Swift in the summer of 2023.
“She’s a great person,” Stonestreet said. “I’m not going to sit here and say I know her. But I’ve been around her enough to know. And I know Travis. Travis is a great guy. And the idea that great people attract great people, I can only assume they’re each equally as great.”
