NextImg:Sky’s Angel Reese suspended one game for eighth technical of the season

Angel Reese was handed a one-game suspension Thursday after she was handed her eighth technical foul of the season Wednesday night in a win over the Sun.

The foul was assessed to Reese with 46 seconds left in the second quarter, and that triggered an automatic suspension without pay for one game.

Reese will serve the suspension on Friday when the Sky take on the Fever.

Under WNBA rules, Reese would be suspended for an additional game for every two additional technical fouls.

The Sky, out of the playoff picture with a 10-30 record, are down to just four games left in their season.

Reese was battling for position under the basket when she hit Sun forward Aaliyah Edwards in the head as Reese spun around toward the basket.

“[The referee] said that it was either gonna be a tech or a flagrant and I didn’t know how that’s determined,” Reese told reporters after the game. “And he said it was too late to put it as a flagrant, and I was like, ‘Why didn’t you let us make that decision?’ knowing that I have already seven technicals, and the next one I would have to sit the next game? So I think we’re gonna go back and talk to the league about it, but I mean, he said it was too late, so I don’t know.”

Reese finished the game with 18 points and 13 rebounds in an 88-64 win over the Sun.

Crew chief Randy Richardson told a pool reporter after the game that there had been a “flail on the court,” which resulted in the technical foul call.

“So we had a non-call on the court and then we went to take a look at it and we deemed that to be a non-basketball act by Reese, and we ended up calling the flail an unsportsmanlike technical foul,” he said.

The suspension came a day after Reese clarified critical comments that she made about her teammates and hinted that she could try to leave the organization if they didn’t build out a competitive team in the offseason.
