For years, I’ve dreaded trading in my handbags for anything that resembles a bulging “mom bag.”

I’ve always been attracted to sleek messenger bags or totes, which I’ve assumed to be more professional, sophisticated, and stylish than bulkier carry-alls, or their shoulder-strapped, school-aged cousins — backpacks.

But, “mom bags” have many redeeming qualities. There’s no question the functionality is there. They’re ideal for commuters, offer extra compartments for diversified storage, and distribute weight more evenly to reduce shoulder pressure. Yet, I still believed they were frumpy and refused to wear one — until I got MZ Wallace’s Metro Utility Backpack.

MZ Wallace is the brainchild of working New York City moms, and ironically, the brand is known for its unostentatious designs that are almost the opposite of what I’d normally go for. I’m usually attracted to flashier, slimmer bags and purses that hold their shape when set down — sort of like the classic Marc Jacobs Tote. But, MZ Wallace’s Utility Backpack is the most practical bag I own, and I have grown to understand, and even adore its soft, billowy construction.

Everything about this bag just makes sense; the abundance of serviceable interior pockets, functional exterior zippers, and the fact that it can be carried three ways (on the back, by the handles, or with the crossbody strap). It’s truly the only ‘mom bag’ I’ll consider wearing, and the latest colorway has come out just in time for Mother’s Day. The soft mauve shade features a gorgeous floral interior combined with shiny metal hardware. It won’t be going out of style anytime soon.

Read on for the lowdown on this multi-functioning pouch, if you’re considering kicking out some handbags to make room for a ‘mom bag’ this Mother’s Day. Dimensions: 12.2 x 5.5 x 16.5 inches

Weight: 2.05 lb

I didn’t think I was ready for this bag until I was.

Now that my daughter is almost a year old, I am constantly running around the city with a combination of her things and mine — diapers, bottles, a laptop, a phone charger, makeup, and more. I needed a bag that could carry it all. The Utility Backpack boasts eight exterior pockets and ten interior pockets, as well as two detachable pouches. I’ve never run out of space. Things stay organized, without me trying to keep things organized (truly, a miracle).

A secure design is essential for running errands or getting to work. The zip-top closure keeps everything safely stowed, and the combination of Italian leather and Oxford fabrication is surprisingly durable given how lightweight the entire bag is. It even works great for grocery shopping; the generous carrying capacity has saved the day on numerous occasions when plastic bags just won’t cut it.

And, when it’s not a backpack or a diaper bag, it’s the ideal ideal carry-on. The luggage sleeve conveniently slips right over a suitcase, so you can truly take this bag everywhere. And, the flexible material tucks easily under seats to save space, which is more than ideal given the frustration of having to check bags at the airport when traveling with little ones.

So, the verdict is in. I have a ‘mom bag.’ And, I love it. The Utility Backpack comes with me everywhere — work, travel, errands, mothering, and everything in between. I would give up a handbag for it any day.
