Shirley MacLaine nearly starred in Breakfast at Tiffany’s — and still has “never” seen the 1961 rom-com.
In the Terms of Endearment star’s new book The Wall of Life: Pictures and Stories from This Marvelous Lifetime, she explains that Audrey Hepburn‘s role of Holly Golightly had been offered to her, though she ultimately rejected the opportunity, per People.
As for why she opted out of the role, she explains in her book that she “didn’t want to have to worry about my weight to be able to wear all those outfits and do all those fittings,” and “didn’t think it was a very good script.” Despite writing that she “doesn’t really regret” the choice, she teased to People that she “wish[es she] had the patience for those wardrobe fittings.”
“Well, listen, I’m a well-known disliker of fittings,” she shared. “I don’t like fittings, and I knew that would take a lot of fittings.”
She also told the outlet that she “wasn’t sure about the script because it was so much about how [she] would look, therefore, about how many fittings.”
“That’s really it,” she continued. “I couldn’t stand the idea.”

MacLaine even admitted to People that she “never saw” the film based on Truman Capote‘s novella of the same name.
“I haven’t seen it,” she added. “I don’t know because I still think it’s about wardrobe.”
MacLaine, who most recently appeared in Season 2 of Only Murders in the Building, pens that she “adored” working with her Hepburn, her Children’s Hour co-star, whom she teased “taught [her] a little about dressing” while she in turn I taught her a little about cussing.”
Breakfast at Tiffany’s is streaming on Prime Video and Paramount+. MacLaine’s memoir comes out on Tuesday (Oct. 22).
