Friday’s (June 16) broadcast marked the season finale of Sherri, which was renewed earlier this year for two more seasons. To celebrate, host Sherri Shepherd took a moment to thank those who helped her along the way, and surprisingly shouted out disgraced host Ellen DeGeneres as the mentor she wants to work with next.
“I tell people all the time, you’ve gotta get mentors to help you,” Shepherd said. “If you’ve never done something before, get people who have done it before you.”
She then proceeded to list the daytime television veterans who have offered her advice during her run on Sherri. “Whoopi Goldberg, who will text me no matter what hour of the day or night I call,” Shepherd said. “Whoopi is always there and will text me back.”
She continued, “Oprah Winfrey, I will be texting Oprah at five in the morning and Oprah will text me back and she’ll go, ‘This sounds like something I need to call you about.'”
She also thanked Good Morning America broadcaster Robin Roberts and The View co-creator Bill Getty for always offering help.
But one can never have too many mentors. “The other person I want to be my mentor: Ellen DeGeneres, where you at? I want you to be my mentor,” Shepherd declared. “Ellen DeGeneres, I need your help, girl.”
DeGeneres retired from daytime television in 2022 after hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show for 19 seasons. Her retirement announcement came after a spate of rumors about her reputation and a report in 2020 that claimed the show’s workplace was filled with“racism, fear and intimidation” from executive producers. DeGeneres has maintained that she was not aware of the toxic workplace her employees described in the report.
In her first interview after her retirement, she admitted that she believed her gender played a role in the “huge public humiliation” she experienced. She said, “It was really interesting because I’m a woman, and it did feel very misogynistic.”
DeGeneres denied that she was leaving the show because of the report, instead claiming it was because hosting was “not a challenge anymore.”
Despite only rolling out one season of her show so far, Shepherd has seen much success as a host on Sherri. The show has earned four Primetime Emmy nominations throughout its run, including a nomination for Outstanding Daytime Talk Series Host for Shepherd.
We’re rooting for another season of success for the talk show host.
Sherri will return for Season 2 on September 18.
