NextImg:Shawn Kemp charged with first-degree assault for parking lot shooting

Former Seattle SuperSonics star Shawn Kemp was charged with first-degree assault on Friday, per the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

The 53-year-old ex-superstar was initially booked for a drive-by shooting back on March 8, but Kemp didn’t receive the new first-degree assault charge until Friday.

Kemp allegedly fired a gun in a Tacoma shopping mall parking lot while trying to recover stolen property.

Kemp claims the act was in self-defense.

No one was injured during the incident.

His lawyer Scott Boatman told ESPN through a statement that the six-time All-Star will enter a not-guilty plea for an upcoming arraignment, which will be on May 4.

“[Kemp] has been fully cooperative with the police and the prosecutor’s office throughout this process,” Boatman said. “He is confident that once the jury hears from the witnesses and sees the evidence at trial, they will conclude that he was justified in defending himself that afternoon.”

The incident was caught on footage, with Kemp approaching a car in the parking lot with a gun, and he later tried to guide officers toward the car.

The former power forward allegedly had pricey items – including an iPhone – stolen from him and traced down the property to the parking lot, sources told Fox 13 Seattle.

Kemp was initially detained and charged with a felony but was later released.

The former power forward played in the NBA from 1990-2004, with his prime spent with the Seattle SuperSonics, where he played for eight seasons.
