NextImg:Sharpen up: You’ve been using a cheese grater all wrong

Be grate-ful for this tip.

A TikToker sharpened the minds of her following after showing a nifty — and apparently more efficient way — of using a cheese grater, aka box grater.

“I was today years old when I realized that I was using the grater all wrong,” @TrishIsRoyal captioned her clip seen nearly 300,000 times.

Using carrots in her box-style grater, Trish then enlightened on the best tactic for this sort of meal preparation: “Turn your grater flat and everything will fall inside and not make a mess. Thank me later.”

Very quickly, commenters praised Trish for her kitchen hack — one which sees a grater turned to its lengthwise side and has food shards fall onto the opposite metal end — thus making it easy to dump out.

“THANK YOU!! I’ve used it wrong my entire life,” said one new subscriber to the method as another agreed: “Smart!”

However, some viewers weren’t convinced that this is the most efficient — or mess-free — way of shredding. “When you hold [a grater] straight, and underneath is the plate/ container it goes straight in,” one skeptic wrote.

There may be another wrong way to use a box grater.

While the tool can be essential for shredding cheese, MarthaStewart.com says to skip the box grater for soft and fresh varieties because high water content will “make a mess” of your mozzarella, most of which will end up smeared inside the metal cube.

Instead, “you’re better off slicing, crumbling or tearing these cheeses by hand,” the blog post notes. And if you insist on using the grater, try coating the tool with cooking spray to prevent sticking.

They added: “You can also try freezing your cheese briefly before grating. This is especially helpful for low-moisture supermarket varieties of mozzarella.”
