Shannon Sharpe has a backup plan in case the broadcasting thing doesn’t work out.
“Pulled up to @djkhaled house and it’s safe to say I think I want to make music now,” the NFL Hall of Famer tweeted Thursday. “I told him to take me straight to the studio and cut a beat on. I got some things I want to get off my chest!”
Sharpe likely has plenty to say following some drama-filled months.
There was a January incident in which he had to be separated from Tee Morant, father of embattled NBA star Ja Morant, during a Grizzlies-Lakers game in a tiff that spilled over onto the court.
That was followed by Sharpe’s high-profile split from Skip Bayless and their Fox Sports debate show, “Undisputed.”
The divorce has led to plenty of speculation as to where the former NFL great may land — though he’s teased a decision in the coming days.
Sharpe has publicly flirted with joining ESPN as a rotating co-host with Stephen A. Smith on “First Take,” telling USA Today Sports it would be “great” to pair up with the longtime orator and fellow Bayless refugee.
“I’m not going to tell you it’s true, but I’m not going to tell you it’s not,” Smith said on his YouTube channel addressing Sharpe rumors. “Yeah, the talks are serious. I want this brother on ‘First Take’… I want him to have a shinier light placed on him than a few of the times we last saw him.
“I want Shannon Sharpe on ‘First Take’ and I aim to get him…..I’m hopeful. I’m very hopeful and very confident that ultimately we will be announcing sooner than later that he will be on ‘First Take.'”
While Smith was adamant he wasn’t “throwing shade” at Bayless, bringing Sharpe aboard would increase his TV exposure, adding to his 1.23 million YouTube subscribers for his “Club Shay Shay” podcast.
If Sharpe does make the ESPN leap, adding musical skills to his repertoire would make it must-see TV.
