The Seahawks ultimately hired a defensive coordinator to follow Pete Carroll — just not the one some expected at the outset of their search.
Seattle are hiring Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald to follow Pete Carroll as their head coach, according to NFL Network.
Macdonald reportedly is in Seattle for his second interview, and beat out the early perceived favorite in Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, among other candidates.
The 36-year-old turned himself into one of the top coaching candidates this offseason by leading Baltimore’s elite defensive unit that led the league by allowing just 16.5 points per game en route to the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
Seattle has had success with a defensive-oriented coach in Carroll, and now hopes Macdonald can do the same.
The Seahawks went 9-8 and missed the playoffs last season.
