Scottie Scheffler’s turbulent Friday is finally over.
The world’s No. 1-ranked golfer finished a strong 5-under second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. Friday afternoon, finishing his round in third after being detained by police early in the morning.
Scheffler spoke to the media after the second round, his first comments since the incident other than a statement he released.
“My head is still spinning,” Scheffler said.
Scheffler said he started his pre-round routine by stretching in his jail cell.
“I was pretty rattled to say the least…,” Scheffler said. “I was shaking for like an hour.”
The incident occurred around 5:45 a.m. due to a misunderstanding regarding traffic flow.
Traffic had built due to a fatal accident involving a shuttle bus near the course, and as Scheffler attempted to get around traffic, a police officer attempted to get him to stop.
He was booked and processed at 7:28 a.m. on four charges — second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from officer directing traffic, according to ESPN, and is accused of “dragging the officer with his car.”
